*Known as Renee* Renée's father Landau, Salo Landau, was a famous chess master. In 1936 he was champion of the Netherlands and the match Euwe-Alekhine, a year earlier, he acted as Aljechins secondant. Alekhine later claimed to his defeat was due to a Jewish plot. After the deportion began Salo decided to flee to Switzerland, their daughter left with them. On September 28, 1942 the couple moved in to Breda by train. Once the train left the station, Salo and his wife were arrested. Salo had an attempt to find a hiding place for his daughter. He declined to give the adress. From Armersfoort, Netherlands he arrives in Westerbrok on November 7, 1942. He is deported to Auschwitz three days later. Susanna (mother) had been in Westerbork since October 13,1942. She was hiding her daughter and was given in return a privileged place on the Stamm List. Renee Landau was arrested in November. She arrived in the Dutch theater opposite located the nursery end. She was one of the first few children rescued from the day care center. To a house of Max Euwe, she went to her second hiding. Eighteen months later, she was betrayed a second time. On September 4, 1944 she went along with her mother and many other "privileged" deported to Theresienstadt. They stayed there until October 12, 1944 they were deported to Auschwitz. They were sadly murdered in the gas chamber two days later-Renee was only 5 1/2 years old.
